Activity 04: Introduction to Web Development

Activity 04 – website evaluation

You may have already decided what makes a good or bad web site, but we need to look at this in more detail.

  1. You have already accessed a number of web sites today. What did you think of them?  What were the good parts?  What were the bad parts?  Open a Word document and make a few notes on what you think so far.  Also add screen shot examples.  By now you will have remembered to cite sources – this is a good habit to get into.
  2. From your notes put the ideas in to groups to form “criteria for good web site design”.
  3. Share your ideas others by using the discussion forum in Blackboard.
  4. Look at the following websites.  All are relevant to this activity.  Add notes to your word document.

http://www.library.cornell.edu/olinuris/ref/research/webeval.html
http://lib.nmsu.edu/instruction/evalcrit.html
http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/Evaluate.html

  1. What criteria do you now think are important for evaluating web sites?  Is there anything you should add to your original list?
  2. Use WORD to create a list for your evaluation criteria.  Save the document in your module folder.
  3. The following are good for showing examples of good and bad web design.  Have a look, do you agree?  What do you like / dislike?

  1. Next look carefully at the Cyberguide internet evaluation forms available from the useful links page on the module website (one side is for Content the other side is for Design).  Save both of the forms into your module folder. Choose two websites to evaluate using each of these forms for NEXT WEEK. You will need to print out the forms, fill them in and bring them in next week.
  2. Finally, create a grid in Word something like the one below.  Use this to tease out your ideas from your evaluations and save in your module folder.

Good/ appealing

Bad/annoying

Are you using sensible file names? Can you easily find the documents again?

Hint: you will need to refer back to your research for the assignments so don’t forget where you saved it.
