Encouraging students to use their blogs

I have been thinking of ways to encourage students to contribute to their blogs outside the taught sessions in the hope that more time on task will mean more learning as suggested by the Seven Principles of Good Practice. So I set an activity which we started towards the end of the first session where students were asked to critique a web site against a set of criteria we have derived in the session. They were also asked to comment on some one else’s critique.

Some students got on with this without further intervention on my part but to encourage the others I did two things:

  • I made supportive comments on their work using the comment facility on their blog;
  • I posted a comment about their work, together with a list of links to their posts;
  • I posted a second set of links to pick up those who contributed later in the week.

Most of the students contributed something on their blog and a number of them commented on others.
