What software shall we use?

I am considering what software to use with my students on a web design module.

The possible systems are:

  1. Wordpress, Firefox with the Wizz RSS plugin
  2. Wordpress and Flock
  3. ELLG with Firefox

My initial idea was to go with option 1 because I am familiar with all the software and it has a reliable portable version. The RSS aggregator extension works well but you need to remember to put the blogs you want to keep an eye on into your watch list.

Flock has a the advantage that it has a built in RSS aggregator and can be set up so that you can blog directly from it and automatically save your blogs on your hard disk, however it is a less mature platform than Firefox although it does have a portable version.

ELGG has a built in blog and allows me to set up students by sending them an email. It also has a friends list which is easy to set up and a file area (limited to 10Mb). However it is a new piece of software for me and does not appear to use RSS for friend’s blogs so you have to look at the blog to see if there are any new posts. It does not need a portable version as everything is online. I have tried the file upload system and found that it does not replicate a standard folder system so that relative links in web pages do not work. Any CSS has to put into the header of the file and images cannot be embedded.
